The Tale All Are Told

The 'official' story of the kingdom

"In a world of magic and chaos once ruled a human king. He was cruel and relentless, treating creatures from all planes like his servants and forcing all into servitude. Despite his human nature, it was said that evil laid whispers of chaos in his mind and gave him the power to manipulate all life, and in its finality, death.

Few were those who dared defy him. As powerful as he already was by himself, he shared that power with his soldiers and also had the loyalty of dragons. While considered noble creatures, these were undeniably swayed by their greed as the king offered them endless gold and jewels, and were thus feared by all. The kingdom lived in flames and thrived in darkness. People endured famine and plague, with no help from their king. Hope was decaying as humans controlled the very grasp of life of every living thing.

Celestials and gods fought terrible battles against this king and his soldiers, but none came to best him and tell the tale. The humans were protected and aided by dragons, and possessed the power of the nine hells. Ancient deities and old creatures found their end and were forgotten by all but ancient texts.

One day, a child of the sun itself came to life and descended upon earth with the will to save all. Creatures of all kinds sang his arrival and weeped in his presence ; he shone like a thousand stars and promised them peace and glory for years to come. He named himself Lathan, but all game him the title of "the Holy Paladin". He seemed human, but glowed like the sun and wore a golden armor with patterns of fallen celestials who fought against the evil king. He healed the sick and gave food to the dying ones, and so gained the praise and support of all. With him came winged alien creatures, skin pale as pearls, shining like satin with translucent eyes devoid of life. They fought the armies of the king under Lathan's command and destroyed his soldiers during endless months. It was said that the war lasted for a decade.

After what seemed like centuries, The Holy Paladin finally reached the king on a day we now call the "Glorious feast". He summoned a blade that none had seen before ; its black metal sliced through the ennemies and seemed to absorb the souls of all creature it touched. People all thought that on this day, Lathan ascended as a god and gained a holy weapon. With the support of all the kingdom, he took the king's head and sent the whispering devil back to Nessus, the deepest plane of the nine hells.

All texts written on that day claimed Lathan was declared king of the kingdom instantly and that none disputed his ruling. He cast the remaining dragons out of the castle but bought their loyalty to protect the barriers of his new empire. People considered this generous and saw their new ruler as kind and forgiving.

To this day, the kingdom lives in peace and creatures are no longer servants of the humans. Dragons are "protectors" of the realm under the Paladin's commands. People feast and drink on the holy day of the Glorious feast, praising the tale of the Holy Paladin who saved the kingdom. His time has long passed since then, but his family and heritage lives on as the sole ruler of the country."

It also seems that humans are now extinct, but no one questions where they went.

Sol

Solace is the sole daughter of the Vermeil family, an ancient but powerful lineage of dragon shapeshifters known to be violent and bloodthirsty. In a kingdom where demons still threaten the borders it once breached, the Vermeil family has to keep the borders safe to repent from the sins they commited in the past.
As Sol is a woman, she can't become heiress. Her mother decided to promise her to the prince of the realm to form a treaty of peace between her family and royalty. Surprisingly, they accepted. Torn between the need to serve her family and live freely, Sol is forced to act as a pawn in a game she's not aware of. Despite her greatest efforts, she barely gets any form of approval from her family and often daydreams of living in a different reality.
Sol is the nickname her maid got her when she was just a child. She thought it more affectionate and closer to Soleil, meaning the sun in French.
As she grew up in a cold household, her maid was her only friend. She presumably died of old age but evidence shows sol's mother might have been part of a gruesome plan involving her murder.
Unfortunately for her, she's also had trouble finding how to fully transform and has so far only been able to produce fire through her fingertips and possesses a great force. She once almost succeeded in transforming, resulting in her getting scales all over her back and splits on her jaw where there should have been the mouth of a dragon. After this incident, Sol's mother ordered her to stop her trials and hide her mouth until marriage, declaring she would be "too hideous to look at" if she were to push it further.
Sol is known to be fearless and thick-headed. She is uncomfortable with expressing feelings and finds herself containing her emotions all the time. Because she grew up in wealth and posesses dragon blood, she enjoys luxurious items such as jewelry and expensive gowns. She's constantly wearing a ruby necklace, a magical family heirloom passed down multiple generations supposedly acting as an enhancer for draconic powers.
Sol has grey tips on both her hands and ears, custody of the holy Paladin stating a decree that all creatures had to be recognizable when in human shape after the war. As dragons were considered traitors, they had to burn their tips to show they followed the rules.
She also possesses golden marks on her body. Previously burn wounds from past trainings, they got turned into gold when Sol made a pact with Reyl.

Eris

Eris is Sol's appointed knight.
She has blurred fragments of her own memories ever since she got into an accident at the training camp where she was when she trained to become a knight.
Eris doesn't know much about her history and is, because of this, a perfect weapon for the kingdom she ought to serve. She's a fearful warrior and finds her strength in the most chaotic ways of killing. Her superiors keep concealed documents of her past, unbeknownst to her, because it contains secret theories on how she might have actually lost her memories. Before joining the knight training camp, Eris was a farmer. She thinks she joined the army to help against demon breaches, but doesn't remember even having family.
Eris is covered with battle scars, but mostly, large wounds on her eyes, as if someone had been trying to scratch them out. Her pupils are divided in two milky white pearls and she is mostly blind, but her other senses are heightened to compensate for it. She wears a helmet that hides the top of her face to conceal the daunting sight. She has dark hair, greyish skin and often looks like she could be a statue.
She got called to the Vermeil family under royal orders to act as a guard keeping Sol in her chambers, and later on as more personal guard, slowly getting weirdly attached to her and accompanying her in her quests.
Eris is wearing a dragon armor to show what family she's serving. She also wears scrolls of runes on her arms that an archmage made for her as she one day fell deathly sick to the point of feeling her life getting drained from her insides. The archmage believed her to be under a curse ever since she got into her accident and found no plausible explanation as to how it might have happened. The runes help her stay focused when Eris doesn't feel alone in her own mind.

Reyl

Reyl is a child of the three divinities known as the Moirai.
He is a mysterious & magical being trapped in Sol's kingdom making "pacts" with creatures in need, somehow always present, all-seeing and all-hearing.
Reyl's intentions remain unknown and his appearance varies on who he might be talking to. Sol's version of Reyl consists of an angel-like figure with long red hair. Long pairs of wings can be seen following his shadow, and a red string is always attached around his body. He cuts it with each pact he does. He possesses powers such as flying, manipulating the mind (he can force an individual to look at him after locking eyes for 5 seconds and influence their emotions) and enhancing already existing aptitudes (ex; he will help Sol transform).
Reyl is androgynous and always seen as smiling. His calm temperament clashes with his actions ; he's manipulative and will always try to turn things his way. When "meeting" Sol for the first time, he will whispers promises of power to her and will only act once she accepts his conditions. He thinks fondly of her and sees her as a reflection of what he is ; a lost child, stolen from his family and forced to live in a false depiction of life. He also grows attached to her presence as one would with the subtle warmth of sun rays.
Eris however, Reyl dislikes and flees. He sees something wicked in her and urges Sol to not get too close to her. (which she obviously fails to do)
Around Lucius, Reyl seems more tense and treats him like a wild animal.
Reyl is not invincible and can fear death, but acts like it can't reach him. He makes it known he wants to reach his family and gathers various forms of power to do so, but never explains how he intends to complete his quest.

Lucius

Lucius is a lone adventurer, living in a small cabin in the woods. He grew up in the countryside with his mom, who was a doctor, and his sister. He one day fell madly in love with a woman whom he had two kids with, and made sure they had everything they needed despite them only being farmers. He raised flocks of sheeps, accompanied by his sister and wife, and took care of the eldery. Lucius was a saint, loved by all and adored by children. Unfortunately, fate's tides turned and mysery struck his poor soul. His daughter, barely 8, fell deeply sick and began coughing blood whenever she ate. Worried and devoid of money, he let his wife and sister take care of the barn while he would search for herbs and potions that might help her. With the research of his passed mother, he gathered ingredients from the forest, venturing deeper than he had ever done so before, finding poisonous flowers and animal carcasses. He did question what his mother might have been looking for, but had no time to think and only wanted his daughter to get better. He eventually found all he needed to prepare a "rejuvenating" potion his mother had created with animal parts, and went to give it to his daughter. She took it before falling asleep, and didn't cough up blood.
That night was a full moon, and as Lucius was taking care of a wounded sheep that got attacked by wolves the night before, he realized the poor beast wasn't in a normal decaying state. Blood shimered black under the faint moonlight and it's beating heart was fast but steady, like it knew it's end was near and simply accepted it. Lucius reached for a knife to end the sheep's mysery, but realized too late the creature being snatched away by a quick shadow. Now alone in a silent barn, equipped with only a small knife, Lucius did not know what happened, nor remembered the details of what came next. In a blur, the shadow got up, not on four but two legs, and struck Lucius. He staggered and felt a crack as rows of teeth chewed his neck. He screamed and tried to push the creature away, to no avail. From a distance, Lucius heard his wife calling for his name, surely wondering about the ruccus they had made. In the blink of an eye, the shadow turned towards the barn's door and rushed through it. Before Lucius could react, he fell unconscious, his neck wide open.
When the next morning came, Lucius felt like he had died. He tasted old blood on his lips and realized in horror that his whole body was drenched in a mix of sweat and blood, his veins pulsing hard and devoid of color. Terrified, he ran for his house to see if what attacked him might have reached his family, only to stop in front of the door, seeing more blood, smeared all over the entrance of his home.
He entered, slowly, and saw piles of corpses with unrecognizable features but instantly knew who they were from their size or the color of their hair. With dread rapidly sinking in, Lucius screamed in horror and cursed all gods he could think of. A noise startled him, and he turned to face the direction it came from. There, in the corner, laid his daughter, mouth covered red and eyes shining in the dark. She was panting hard and blinking rapidly.
He did not understand it at first. But after seeing her expression, he realized his daughter was no more. She screamed, making a sound so horrid he might have thought it was a banshee, and lept yet again at him. He braced himself, and with a force that was unknown to him, grabbed her by the neck and shoved her against the ground. Crying, all he could say was "I'm so sorry" before pressing down his fingers and sensing her pulse stop with horrid slowness. When her eyes stared at him in silence, he let go and fell to the ground next to her, weeping. Surrounded by his beloved ones, all he could feel was pure agony and disbelief. He wanted to join them, right there and then, and laid on the floor until he had no energy or drop of blood left.
Unfortunately for him, fate had other plans. His wounds somehow healed themselves as he fell asleep, and Reyl appeared in his mind to soothe his nightmares while promising him a way to avenge his family. Lucius knew, deep down, that what happened was all his fault, but could'nt let go of the rage seeping in his blood and listened, in silence, to Reyl's words.
